At last, Florida’s east coasters can get in on what the west coasters already know is a good deal — Publix’s in-store cooking school. Apron’s Cooking School opens Nov. 6 in Boca Raton at the Polo Club Shoppes off Military Trail near Clint Moore road.

Samantha Noland has been named “resident chef” for the Boca school, but other in-house instructors and experts appear at the various Apron’s — in Alpharetta, Ga., Tampa, Sarasota, and Jacksonville, and now, Boca Raton. They teach techniques and individual food prep (bread baking, seafood cooking, knife skills, crepes) as well as whole meals and holiday-centric foods such as gingerbread houses, fall dinners or party foods. Classes on specific cuisines — Greek, Italian and Cuban — are on the calendar.

Guest chefs will appear and demo as well: Carole Bloom, a noted pastry and dessert author and chef, will be teaching a class on chocolate desserts Nov. 18. Wine tastings and pairings are slated (Chateau Ste. Michelle winery is upcoming). Group lessons are available for parties such as bridal showers, kids’ birthday parties, or women’s groups. Classes are set to a theme: make pizza, learn to create hors d’oeuvres, or holiday foods.

Also on the calendar are series classes; an upcoming one on seafood techniques is weekly for three weeks, and costs $150 for the trio.

Especially useful for beginning cooks might be the upcoming Thanksgiving Day Feast 101 — a boot-camp hands-on class for cooks. Sign up early; this is sure to be popular. The cookie classes in December will likely fill up quickly, too.

Reservations are required in advance; space is limited. You can sign up in the store or online, where you’ll also find a complete class schedule. Class prices vary — from around $35 to $150 for a series.

A variety of events is planned the first week — kids’ cooking demos as well as wine tastings; check the web site or the school, which is a few doors down from the Publix in the Polo Shoppes.
