After 5: Charley’s Crab in Palm Beach Happy Hour with Ocean View

June 24th, 2010 · No Comments

AFTER 5 – Charley’s Crab Palm Beach

Happy hours: 4-7 p.m. daily.

The crowd: Mostly an over-40 group of couples, singles, and friends hanging out, casually dressed.

Surrounds: Charley’s Crab has two bars, one within view of the dining room and a second, cozy area known as the Ocean Bar. The dining area bar has comfy seats and warm wood, but the Ocean Bar has floor to ceiling windows and a view of the ocean across the street from almost every seating arrangement.

Barback: We arrived early and chose the Ocean Bar. Lili, the bartender, was seating customers, mixing and pouring drinks, serving food and clearing tables. Still, she had a smile and an answer for every question.

Mango mojito

The sips: You can choose from a variety of martinis, cocktails, wines and beers ranging from $3 to $5. We sampled several. A definite favorite was the $5 Continental Divide, a martini made with Stoli vodka, Tanqueray gin, and sour apple. Cool and smooth with a wonderful splash of apple, it was perfect for sipping while watching the ocean. The $5 Mango Mojito proved a good choice for the rum-lover. Mixed with mint and mango, it also spelled “summer.”  For those who like their drinks unembellished, the classic Stolichnaya was satisfying at $5, and even better with a shot of vermouth thrown in.

The noshes: An adequate, but not overly adventurous lineup. The steamed mussels, sautéed with fennel and orange zest, and the plate of three oysters on the half shell – each $5 – helped the pours go down. The $5 slider burger plate was fun, especially with the light onion strings. But the domestic cheese plate wasn’t anything you couldn’t pick up at Publix.

Tunes or noise: A ‘60s mix was not overpowering, especially when we were chatting with a couple at a neighboring table.

Rating: 3.5 olives out of 5.
