After 5: Funky Happy Hour at Bizaare Ave. Cafe Lake Worth

July 9th, 2010 · No Comments

Happy hours: 5 – 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the bar only

The crowd: Dressed up or dressed down, the word is funky. Clunky jewelry and jeans decorate the crowd.

Surrounds: This is a one-of-a-kind watering hole and restaurant. Seating arrangements duplicate comfy sofa settings like you would find in your own living room. And almost everything, from silly wall signs to Indian elephants has a price tag dangling – it’s all for sale. Everything, that is, except those great Stella Artois glasses used to serve our beer. They’re apparently hard to get and the place only has six of them.

Barback: David gave us lots of attention and that wasn’t just because we were in early when the place was nearly empty. He really enjoys his job and chatting up the people who stop in.

The sips: Wines, beers and well drinks are half price during happy hour, at the bar only. That makes this a fun place to sit atop a bar stool, talk to David and fellow bar patrons, and play guessing games about what each of the unique antique pieces and knick-knacks might sell for.  Attracted to that glass candle holder? Put up $20 and it’s yours. The house wine, a Castle Rock pinot noir, and the house beer, Beach Bum Blonde Ale, are good deals at two-for-one specials. Two glasses of wine were $7 and two beers, $5.

The noshes: No free bar snacks, and no bar menu. But the food off the regular menu is good. The carmelized onion dipping sauce with crackers, apples, pears, and grapes ($14), was a tasty accompaniment to our drinks, and more than enough for two.

Tunes or noise: ‘60s music rocks the house, but isn’t overwhelming.

Rating: 4 out of 5 olives, for unique surroundings that provide a chance to drink and shop at the same time!
