After 5: Spicy Happy Hour at RA Sushi, Downtown at the Gardens

September 9th, 2010 · No Comments

RA Sushi, Downtown at the Gardens

Viva Las Vegas roll

Happy hours: Monday-Saturday, 3-7 p.m. at the bar and the patio; Sunday, 8-11 p.m.

The crowd: Geared to the 25- to 45-year-olds, the bar draws casually dressed customers eager to chill out.

Surrounds: Lots of high-topped tables and a winding bar inside that catches the glow of the red balls of light hanging overhead; outside, comfortable tables and chairs for those who like a courtyard and a cigarette.

Barback: Quick to hit you with the happy hour menu when you sit down and fast to follow up when you’re ready to order.

The sips: Take your pick, from $2 to $6 a drink. Tired of sweet-tasting martinis? Order the Saketini, with vodka, sake, and cucumbers floating atop. It’s cool, refreshing and a great change from fruity flavors. If fruity is still your thing, go for the mango margarita. Both drinks are $5. The best deal is the Kirin beer. Light or regular, and with or without sake, you get a 22 oz. bottle – nearly two glasses – for $5 without sake and $6 with it.

The noshes: This is a sushi bar, so Asian-themed food predominates. I tried the Viva Las Vegas roll, very popular with RA regulars. Whoo! I’m awake! It’s topped with spicy tuna that gets your mouth watering and clears your sinuses. The good news is that if it’s overwhelming, you can easily spoon off the spicy, crunchy topping and go right to the tasty kani kama crab and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed and lightly tempura battered.

Tunes or noise: Rocking, but not enough to drown out customer chatter.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 olives.
