High school seniors from Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties can enter the 2011 “It’s Vegalicious” recipe contest to win $5000, or a gift card for $500 for a party at the vegetarian restaurant, Sublime, in Fort Lauderdale. All that’s needed is a top vegan recipe – one made with no animal products whatsoever.
Market and restaurant team up
Sublime and Whole Foods Market are teaming up for the contest. Judges are looking for the best vegan version of a soup, salad, appetizer, entree or dessert. The top three recipes will be chosen, and the students will cook them off for judges on Sunday, May 1, at Sublime restaurant.
Sublime owner Nanci Alexander said in a statement, “Sublime is thrilled to partner with Whole Foods to offer students an opportunity to think about plant-based cuisine and to inspire higher education through the It’s Vegalicious Recipe Contest.”
What is vegan?
Vegan foods are entirely plant based. A vegan diet differs from vegetarian, in that some vegetarians will eat eggs, honey or dairy products that come from living animals. Those who follow the strict vegan diet eat no foods “with a mother or a face.”
Fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains and seaweeds are allowed. These foods can be raw or cooked.
Deadline for the contest is Friday, April 15 – all the rules and information are available at the website, itsvegalicious.com
