EatBeat: Girl Scout Cookies Sale Starts Today

January 23rd, 2009 · 4 Comments

*Editor’s Update on this blog post: Address correction for the Bushel Stop.

I’ve never figured out why the Girl Scouts start their annual Cookie Sale in the month most people start a diet. I can hear the shards of willpower of hundreds of dieters tinkling to the floor as we speak.

They’re even making it harder for you to make excuses not to buy them this year — one troop is holding “drive-thru” cookie sales in Lantana and Delray Beach at the Bushel Stop landscaping centers — 8640 Lantana Road, Lantana and *8596 W. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach. That takes place the next three Saturdays. No need to get out of the car and spend those calories walking!

Each scout in these troops are hoping to sell 700 boxes of cookies so they can buy a trip to Juliette Low’s home in Savannah, Ga. — the birthplace of the Girl Scouts.

At the Bushel Stop sales locations, you also get a free cookbook of recipes using Girl Scout cookies if you buy five boxes of cookies.

The usual cookies are here: Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Thanks-a-Lots, and Lemonades. This year, there’s a new lower-fat cookie in the batch: Reduced Fat Daisy Go Rounds. They’re packed in little bags and are cinnamon crisps, basically.

They’re $3.50 a box, and I probably am wasting electrons by telling you they freeze just swell, fully wrapped. Especially wistful thinking, since they’ve cut back on the number of Thin Mints per box rather than raise their prices or cut quality.

PS: The GS poobahs assure us there’s no threat of salmonella from their peanut butter cookies.

A girl scout in Palm Beach Gardens (Riverside Drive, just north of Holly) setup shop in her circular driveway. It was so easy to drive by last night and pick up a box of caramel delights and peanut butter cookies. Drive through may have killed Starbucks but it helped her make a sale.

Can you still buy G.S. Cookies?

JoAnne, I’ve got a half-empty box of caramel delights that I’d be willing to offer you for cheap.

    Cheers,
    Matt

I don’t know of any available in the county (ignore Matt) for sale; it’s possible other troops in other counties are holding their sales this month, but I’m not sure. Google it; maybe they’ll turn up.
