EatBeat: Quashing Rumors – Cafe L’Europe Still Going

January 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Rumors of restaurant closings or sales are flying these days, and no one will tell or say – if they know – where they originate. It’s frustrating for Norbert Goldner, one of the partners, along with spouse Lidia, who owns Cafe L’Europe in Palm Beach. He’s battling rumors, coming to him second- and third-hand, about the long-time dame of restaurants on the island, closing.

“You’re the first who has asked me directly about it,” Goldner said today in a phone interview. “I would like to know where these rumors are coming from — who is telling them? No, we are not closing, we are not selling — we’re open and doing OK — as well as everyone else, I suppose.”

Several of his staff told him they heard these rumors as well. “I don’t know where they’re coming from — but I hear we’re closing, we’re getting a divorce, or we’re selling. None of these things is true. We’re not closing — we’re getting ready for a Superbowl party, Valentine’s Day, which is always good for us, and then the Oscar party — it’s in February this year, too.”

Christmas and New Year’s was very good for them, he said, but “January is typically a little slow, but then, late January through March, it picks up again. Everyone is in the same boat, though — what can you do when the hotels around are at 35 percent occupancy? That’s everywhere, and of course, on the island, too. We have to adjust and do what we can.”

He said that might include creating a three-course prix fixe dinner for around $45 a person, or maybe extending the summer Taste the Flavor of Palm Beach lunch special for $20.08 — as many other top restaurants have done. “That was so popular with the diners — they really liked being able to come in and get a nice lunch for the set price.”

Goldner said he’s been too busy at his own place to get out to other restaurants to see what they’re charging, “but maybe I should check them out. Everyone is affected, so I should see what some of the others are doing. We willl have to get creative, and can’t be set in our ways, but still maintain the quality we’re known for. There are ways to do it.”

Dining at Cafe L’Europe is always a pleasure. Years ago, I had a dear friend who loved to eat there and she loved to take me with her… boy, do I miss those days!
