EatBeat: Taste Gastropub in Delray Beach Closed for Now

Susser

Taste Gastropub in Delray’s Pineapple Grove has closed – at least for now.

Rumors have it that owner Robert Workens wants to reopen it with a different concept, and star chef Allen Susser won’t be involved in that reincarnation.

Locals in the biz say Susser didn’t have the name recognition in Palm Beach County that the restaurant banked on in the start. Others in the restaurant biz, who won’t go on record, speculate the menu was the problem. “Too South Beachy” for one, and “way overpriced for the bar-sized portions” for another.

Susser, of Chef Allen’s in Miami, has been a fixture since the ’80s when he opened his restaurant in Aventura. He was part of the Mango Gang – a group of chefs who put South Florida and its tropical foods on a cuisine map.

Location was mentioned by some as the problem at Taste – only light foot traffic finds its way off Atlantic Avenue up Second Avenue into Pineapple Grove, despite efforts by the large group of merchants to attract those customers.

Always sorry to hear when a restaurant doesn’t make it. That is off the beaten path for the night-time Atlantic Avenue crowd, though.

Overpriced … with mosquitoes in the back open-air area.
