EatBeat: Get Raw – and Vegan – at New SOMA Center on Clematis

June 18th, 2010 · No Comments

Raw food aficionados already know of the SOMA Center in downtown Lake Worth. There’s a new one on Clematis Street in downtown West Palm that’s having its grand opening Saturday.

Raw food cuisine, a diet that consists of food cooked to no more than 115 degrees – or not at all, so as to maintain living enzymes – is more popular on the U.S. West Coast. It’s  making small  inroads here, however. For some time, it’s been available on limited days at the Hippocrates Institute, a health-spa  sanctuary in western West Palm Beach.

Two SOMA Centers in the county

Now, raw food diners, as well as vegans (those who eat plant-based foods  or  “nothing with a mother”) have the two SOMA Centers – one on Lake Avenue in Lake Worth, and the new one on Clematis.

At the cafe, the menu features entrees such as vegan burgers with  “unfried” fries, vegan lasagna, salads, soups and smoothies, desserts made of raw fruits and vegetables (chocolate mousse made from avocados and raw cacao), and flax-seed flour pancakes.

The center offers yoga, meditation and belly-dancing classes, and classes and lectures on raw and vegan foods as part of its holistic approach to health and wellness.

For more information and a schedule of free and moderately priced events for Saturday’s Grand Opening, call the center at 561-429-5509 or visit their web site at thesomacenter.com.
