EatBeat: Italian Oven Cafe Open

September 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Another newbie in CityPlace opened this week: the Italian Oven® Cafe. It’s a Pittsburgh import, and falls under the genre of “fast-casual” — and we mean fast.

Its high-tech: the unique features are the wi-fi kiosk outside, where you can place your order before going inside and picking it up. You also can text-message an order in, too or order on the Web and then go get it.

Oh, yeah, the menu: High on the supposedly healthful pyramid of the Mediterranean diet — whole grains, fruits, olive oil, seafood at the fore. Wood-fired pizzas, panini, pastas, soups and salads are the main fare. There’s a lump crab Caesar salad, and an intriguing pizza: proscuitto di Parma, arugula, pistachios, locatelli cheese all topped with a fig-balsamic vinegar glaze. Special panini includes the chicken BLT – made with pancetta and fontina cheese. Italian coffees also are available here. Lunch and dinner daily.

A little corporate humor: The owners were boasting in 2006 about the “coup” deal coming into CityPlace where, according to their interview in the Pittsburgh Business Journal,  they “beat out Panera Bread and California Pizza Kitchen” for a spot in the West Palm plaza that “attracts 7 million visitors.”

Guess something got in their way: Panera Bread opened in CityPlace earlier this summer.

The chain is moving its headquarters here; guess they’re bullish on South Florida anyway. Several other locations here are planned as franchises.
