After 5: The Lodge in Boca Raton Has Craft Beers at Happy Hour

Happy hours: 4-7 p.m. daily, featuring half-price drinks. The “8 before 8” special — a burger with fries and a pint of beer for $8 before 8 p.m. — is a real meal deal.

The crowd: The Lodge is the anti-Boca. You’ll see some business people gathered at the bar after work, but the crowd is young and friendly. No attitude, and no posing.

Surrounds: The place is paneled, and reminds you of, well, a lodge. With its antler chandeliers and backwoods sensibility, it seems more Adirondacks than South Florida, but that’s part of the fun.

Barback: Service has been consistently friendly each visit. Kudos to Jessica the bartender, who made great suggestions on our last visit.

The sips: The Lodge prides itself on its selection of craft brews. There’s a goodly number available on tap, and an extensive list of bottles. Lagunitas American Pale Ale had a crisp, grapefruity finish, while the Gordon ale was an altogether hoppy experience. They also have a range of root beers, sodas and a small wine list.

The noshes: It is classic bar fare done well. The hummus was fresh and smooth, though pita might have proven a better accompaniment than the slightly dry toast slices we were served. The Smoked Chipotle BBQ Chicken Nachos easily served a group of six one visit. It was heavy, but hey, it’s nachos. They get points for the homemade barbecue sauce and pico de gallo. Also a winner: The Mini Chicken Sliders, which were light and crispy. Ours were tossed in a spicy wing sauce. Perfection. And the Truffle Fries, infused with truffle oil and topped with Parmesan, were perfect for countering the intoxicating effects of that beer.

Tunes or noise: Pandora rules here, with a tuneful mix of modern and alternative rock.
