After 5: Happy Hour at Bar Louie, Boynton Beach

November 12th, 2010 · No Comments

Happy hours: 4-7 p.m. daily, featuring half-price food and drinks.

The crowd: You could call it intergenerational at Bar Louie. Business people gathering for after-work cocktails, a few families — most in the 30 to 50 age range — looking to unwind.

Surrounds: The place has inside and outside bars. The outside area had a lively crowd, many of whom were watching college football on the big-screen TVs. There’s a long, granite bar that’s a perfect place for mingling, and plenty of seating at individual tables.

Barback: The bartender was busy but friendly, and called her customers “hon.” She made good recommendations and kept the plates cleared and glasses filled.

The sips: The featured drink was Woodchuck hard cider, perfect for a fall night. The place also has an extensive range of draft beers and an award-winning cocktail menu.

The noshes: Grandma always served pimiento cheese spread on white bread. But Bar Louie kicks that old standby up a notch with chunks of cheddar and plenty of pimiento for its slightly spicy dip, served with tortilla chips. Also noteworthy: the calamari served in a paper cone and served with a spicy cocktail sauce. Most of the apps — called small plates — are around $4 to $5 at Happy Hour. Others include Bavarian pretzel sticks, potstickers and sliders. On the lighter side, Bar Louie also has a appetizer plate with hummus, tabbouleh and tzatziki, served with pita and cucumbers.

Tunes or noise: There was a healthy din, with a modern-rock backdrop. Nothing too noisy for conversation, though.

Rating: 4 out of 5 olives.
