John Tanasychuk of the Sun Sentinel writes today about a bourbon cocktail in honor of I’ll Have Another – the potential for horseracing’s Triple Crown that takes the track at Belmont this Saturday.

It will be served at the III Forks and Cantina Laredo in Hallandale at the Village of Gulfstream Park – right next to the Gulstream Racetrack (perfect place to bet and watch).

The restaurants will offer specials for the race – from 4-7 p.m, there are 2-for-1 house wine, domestic and imported beer deals. Kobe beef sliders will be $3 at the III Forks bar and Cantina Laredo’s bar will have chips and a cup of chile con queso for $3.

The Belmont Jewel cocktail

At the Belmont Racetrack, they’ll be serving up the “official” cocktail for the race, dubbed the Belmont Jewel – as in Jewel in the Triple Crown. Made with bourbon – because it’s horse-country related, it’s got pomegranate and lemonade to brighten it up.

Here’s the recipe for the Belmont Jewel, and the one for I’ll Have Another.

Belmont Jewel cocktail

  • 1.5 ounces Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon
    2 ounces lemonade
    1 ounce pomegranate juice

Shake vigorously with ice and serve on the rocks. Garnish with maraschino cherry or lemon twist. Makes 1 drink.

I’ll Have Another

  • 8 mint leaves, plus mint sprig for garnish
    1 lime wedge
    1 lemon wedge
    1 orange wedge
    1 ounce simple syrup
    Ice
1 1/2 ounces Jim Beam Devil’s Cut Bourbon
    1/2 ounce Harvey’s Bristol Cream
    1 1/5 ounces orange juice

In a cocktail shaker, muddle mint, fruit wedges and simple syrup. Fill shaker with ice. Add bourbon, Bristol Cream and orange juice. Shake to combine.

Pour contents of shaker, including ice, into a 14-ounce footed pilsner glass. Add additional ice to fill as need. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Makes 1 cocktail.
