No Bombshells at American Fine Wine Competition – Just Solid American Vino

February 7th, 2011 · No Comments

Out of 630 American wines that judges spent two days judging at this year’s American Fine Wine Competition, there were 41 double-gold medals awarded. The judges clearly liked what they sipped.

Best of Show wines came from California this year – the red was a 2006 cabernet franc from McKeon-Phillips Winery in Santa Barbara, and the white was a 2008 Estate Chardonnay from Chamisal Vineyard in Edna Valley.

There were no huge dark horse winners this year, as last year’s overall white wine Best of Show from Ohio’s Ferrante Winery provided.

Mark Gauert of City and Shore Magazine reported on this year’s contest, held recently in Fort Lauderdale. Read his story about the judging and travails of those who had to taste all the wines here.

The winning wines will be poured, along with all the others, at the American Fine Wines Competition Gala Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale. A five-course dinner, entertainment and music, raffles and more are part of the event. Tickets benefit the Diabetes Research Institute and the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund.
