Texan Hot Chocolate Could Go for Florida, with 4-Orange Vodka, Too

February 3rd, 2011 · 1 Comment

At the web site drinkoftheweek.com, they proffer up this warm-up drink for the Yankees suffering from extreme white-out syndrome.

I’ve never been in a white-out, though I encountered a blizzard once in New York City.

But I love hot chocolate tipped with spirits – it reminds me of an Irish coffee I enjoyed at an NYC bar the first time I saw snow.

With no snow experience, and coming from a 76 degree Fort Lauderdale, I nearly froze to death walking the ice-slick streets in 17-degree weather in a mini-skirt and a borrowed thin, faux-leopard jacket. My nose and knees were so red, and my lips so blue, friends were hugging me to warm me up, and took me from shop to shop to thaw in between the blocks we had to walk back to our hotel.

We landed in a bar on one block, where I was too frozen to speak, so they ordered for me, then held the cup so I could drink – my hands were shaking too hard.

The trip was memorable for several reasons, but ah – that drink. Nothing since has ever tasted so good in a glass mug.

This looks pretty good, though. (I’d use Florida’s own 4-Orange Vodka, made from Florida’s native oranges in it, but it was put together by a Tito’s vodka guy, thus the nod to it.)

Texan Hot Chocolate

  • 1 oz. Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Paula’s Texas Orange Liqueur
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon sugar to taste
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Marshmallows
  • For garnish: orange twist, shaved chocolate

Combine Paula’s Texas Orange, chocolate chips, sugar and milk in a pot and bring to a slow boil over low-medium heat as to not scorch the milk. Remove from heat and add Tito’s Handmade Vodka. Pour into a favorite mug and top with marshmallows. Garnish with an orange twist and shaved/grated chocolate.

(Drink was created by Russell Davis, Peche; recipe and photo courtesy Tito’s Handmade Vodka.)
