Fire Rock Pizza and Sunday Jazz

August 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

We’ve long been a fan of John Reis and his Fire Rock Pizza on Clematis Street at Flagler. It seems to be the only thing that’s made a go of it at this spot – a puzzle since it’s prime real estate. The view of the Intracoastal, the library lawn and activity along Clematis can’t be beat.

They’ve recently added an Open Mic night at Fire Rock on Sundays, with jazz the underlying theme, but we’ve heard several musical styles in recent weeks.

Hard to resist those pizzas – baked in an oven that John designed to keep the coal ash from building up and scorching everything – they’re simply great. Good pastas, salads and sandwiches, too.

The guys like his wings: No red sauce – these are grilled with onions and then baked off in the coal ovens. Super “grill” flavor. They go great with any one of the 100 bottles of beers he has on his list.

I went on a Sunday night and heard Susan Merritt leading the open mike. She’s great, and she managed to attract one great soloist after another. Oh yeah, the pizza was great, as always.

    What is their best pizza?

I am looking for an awesome BBQ chicken pizza. At Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, they serve an incredible slice with a sweet sauce that is tangy and flavorful loaded with chunks of white meat chicken. Awesome!

I have not found another area pizza to rival that of Mandalay Bay, or even come close.
