John G’s: Not Just For Fish

August 24th, 2008 · No Comments

This stalwart¬†breakfast-lunch spot¬†on Lake Worth’s beachfront may have to move as once again the wrecking ball threatens the old casino property where it’s sat for umpteen years. They say they’ll move, but I’m not liking what they’re projecting (“out west somewhere, maybe”).

Everyone locally knows John G’s in two words: The Line. That’s the line formed mostly in season — no one’s stands in a line in 100 degrees, even it is oceanfront, for any food.

I have a love affair with John G’s gazpacho, and then no matter how hard I try, I get the fish and chips platter — petite or regular, depending on my appetite and what’s planned for dinner.

At a retirement lunch today, however, I stepped outside my comfort zone and got the German dog. I’m delighted I did: It arrived on a toasted poppy-seed bun loaded — and I mean that literally — with kraut plus grilled onions. Delish! They serve a hearty deli mustard with it, as well. Even better. Service: Spot-on as usual.

Here’s the reason this place is successful: A member of the Giragos family is on site at all times; Jay is in the kitchen and Wendy is usually seating you. And they have great folks working there forever. My kind of place — and I’m going to go into John G’s withdrawal once it leaves us — even briefly.
