Sylvester Graham died today, Sept. 11, in 1859.
If you’ve ever eaten a s’more or Key lime pie, or that cherry-cheesecake pie, you should salute him — he’s the creator of the whole wheat cracker known as the Graham cracker.
Mr. Graham was an advocate of vegetarian diets, whole grains and a healthful lifestyle. He’d fit right into today’s Back to the Earth movement. He likely wouldn’t approve of the amount of sugar in these things sold today, however.
Graham crackers – what they’re good for besides s’mores:
- Make a banana (or other fruit) pudding with them instead of vanilla wafers.
- Give to babies instead of zweiback — the hard rusk cookies can chunk off and become lodged in their throats while Graham crackers melt.
- Coat the outside of a cake pan instead of using flour. If you mix the crumbs with cinnamon, it works great on pound cakes and really keeps them from sticking to that center tube. (Toast the crumbs first in the oven.)
