AFTER 5 – The Polo Bar at The Colony, Palm Beach
Happy hours: 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, at the bar and on the poolside patio.
The crowd: Low-key regulars and hotel types looking to relax and chat.
Surrounds: Comfy bar stools and under-bar purse hangers make this a good place to hang out. The bar faces onto the poolside patio, showcasing colorful blooms to enjoy this time of year and good people-watching.
Barback: Nick and Richard were attentive and quick to make suggestions. Richard threw out a few fun stories when he wasn’t mixing and pouring.
The sips: All wines and specialty drinks are half-price. A glass of wine at $10 – half-price – isn’t the cheapest happy hour special you’ll find, but the Napa Nook was satisfying for the Cabernet lovers among us. There are at least ten reds and whites to choose from. The gin and tonic, however, was a better deal at $5. But the specialty drinks are always the most fun. The Lychee Martini, at $7.50, is a unique concoction with fresh lychee fruit, Grey Goose, and a lychee liquer. Yummy.
The noshes: No happy hour specials, but there is a prix-fixe three-course dinner for $35 that includes a choice of salad, entrée, and dessert. Enjoy the light and flaky snapper and the Key lime pie. A great way to wrap up your happy hour.
Tunes or noise: Blessedly quiet, with light music in the background.
