Does your family have a delicious recipe made with olive oil? If so, you could win a two-night’s stay at St. Augustine’s Westcott House, plus three meals, if yours is chosen tops in a contest sponsored by Frixa Olive Oil and its creator.
George Chryssaidis, Frixa creator, is owner of Athena Cafe in the Oldest City, and is hosting an “Olive Oil Challenge” for cooks everywhere.
“In ancient Greece, olive oil was the hottest commodity. It was believed that olive oil brought people strength and youth; infused with flowers and grasses, they produced medicine and cosmetics. Even the olive tree had a ‘Titanic’ resistance, a vital force which rendered them nearly immortal” according to Chryssaidis. Greeks used the olive branch to crown of victors in the original Olympic games.
Chryssaidis partnered with Yeorgios Kostopoulos, a former schoolmate, to bring the premier olive oil to the U.S. Frixa Olive Oil, named for their hometown of Frixa, Greece, is unrefined, first cold-press olives only. Kostopoulos is in Greece, handling the olive groves, and pressing, and limited-production bottling. Chryssaidis handles importing on the U.S. side. The oil is sold to the public and handled in specialty stores, restaurants and at Chryssaidis’ three restaurants.
