First Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville Beach Hotel Going in on Pensacola Beach

May 13th, 2010 · 3 Comments

My kin from the Panhandle are all atwitter: Homeboy Jimmy Buffett, who grew up along the beautiful Gulf Coast around the Panhandle, will build the first of his new hotel brand, Margaritaville Beach Hotels, on Pensacola Beach.

The $50 million, 162-room Gulffront hotel might even open this summer – developer Marilyn Woodbury-Huss  projects it to open in late May or early June. That would be in plenty of time for the Blue Angels to make their July 4 show and tip their wings to the Parrotheads watching that famous air show, by the real homeboys here.

Margarita — or hurricane?

The deal was announced at a business meeting with the city May 12. Everyone’s excited: The whole Gulf Coast beach area needs positive shots like this, especially now, with the BP oil spill adding to possible tourism slides.

The hotel is situated on a former Holiday Inn site – destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.

So I’m wondering, with the track record of the weather on PNS Beach, whether a tall Hurricane might be the better signature drink here.

Here’s a Hurricane recipe from the master mixologist Dale Degroff, just in case. Use fresh squeezed fruits, please. Join me in a chorus: Pour me somethin’ tall and strong…(OK – had to include the video, since it was shot up the road a piece at the Square Grouper.)

Hurricane Recipe

  • 1 oz. Dark Rum
  • 1 oz. Light Rum
  • 1/2 oz. Galliano
  • 3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1 oz. Passion Fruit Syrup
  • 1 -1/2 oz. Orange Juice
  • 1 -1/2 oz. Pineapple Juice
  • Dash of Angostura Bitters

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a Hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with fresh tropical fruit.

I see that the Blue Angels are going to be doing an air show at my hometown of Cape Girardeau, MO, June 19-20.

That gave me an excuse to dig up photos of Aviation Day in 1964, back in the days when flying was still fun.

Please let me know how to get an application for hire at the new hotel in Pensacola Beach as I know it will open soon! Thank you so very much.

Thanks, Nancy, for reading me, but I can only tell you to watch for their web site, coming soon, or maybe, if they’re web savvy, look on Pensacola’s craigslist for job opportunities.
Often, culinary and hospitality schools in the area have placement offices, and might know the people being hired to manage staff there.
If any other readers see this and know the answer, write back!
