Zen Rabbit Crunch

Ever thought about creating a business from your favorite recipe or food product? There are several success stories in our area, and one of those — Lori Saitz of Zen Rabbit Baking Co., the one who makes and sells Zen Rabbit Crunch and Gratitude Cookies, is sharing her experience. In a seminar titled “You Should Sell That!” she’ll tell others how to get started in the food business.

Lori explains that like many others, she was begged by friends to sell her homemade cookies. But, she figured, it was never the “right time.” But now, she says, with so many out of work and thinking about starting their own business, now is the best time for many to take their best recipe and put it to work for them.

Saitz learned the hard way

Saitz writes, “For the past couple of years, I’ve been getting phone calls from people who heard about me through a friend or colleague; people who have recipes that they want to turn into a business. They ask, where do I start? How do a find a place to bake? Where can I buy ingredients wholesale? What licenses do I need? How much insurance is enough?”

She’d learned the hard way — frustrated a lot along the way. She never found what she needed all in one place. “Sometimes after a call,” she writes, “I’d think, oh, I should have told her x, y and z too. Or sometimes the person didn’t even know what questions to ask. So I started putting together an outline of the things a startup food entrepreneur needs to know.”

Now, she’s sharing it all in a seminar on Saturday at Publix GreenWise in Palm Beach Gardens. She’ll be accompanied by her “businesst therapist,” Howard Paris. The seminar will cover all aspects of beginning a business – all the financials and tax info needed, as well as the food and marketing side of the business — how to buy ingredients, determine a price, create packaging and coming up with a market for your item.

You should sell your cheese straws. A bigger hit than your cupcakes…

I haven’t made those in a long while – odd you should suggest them. There are tons more cheeses straws out there than cupcakes; they ship well – perhaps the answer. I like doing the cupcakes more, though they’re much more labor intensive. I imagine I could do both. You’ve given me a good idea.

Cupcakes? Okay. Stork Cakes? Maybe not! That was labor intensive!
